to the International community of Particle Physicists interested in Neutrino Physics ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANNOUNCEMENT of the NuFact02 SUMMER SCHOOL 1st International School on the Neutrino Factory June 24th to June 30, 2002 The Cosener's House, Abingdon, England -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Summer School is being organised to introduce researchers and students to both the particle and accelerator physics aspects of a Neutrino Factory. This will take place in the UK from Monday 24th to Saturday June 29th, 2002, at The Cosener's House, in Abingdon, not far from Oxford and the Rutherford Appleton Lab. This School, the first of its kind, is organized in conjunction with the 4th International Neutrino Factory Workshop, NuFact02, which will take place at Imperial College in London the following week, 1st to 6th July. The School will be an excellent introduction to the NuFact02 Workshop and we expect that a large fraction of the attendees, both students and lecturers, will profit from the opportunity to attend the Workshop. The programme of the School is being formalised. The following topics will be covered: 1) Physics of massive neutrinos 2) Current views of leptogenesis and baryogenesis 3) The impact of a Neutrino Factory on neutrino physics 4) Neutrino Astrophysics 5) Detectors of neutrino oscillations: concepts and R&D requirements 6) Other physics at a Neutrino Factory complex 7) The basic accelerator physics of a Neutrino Factory 8) The technical challenges of a Neutrino Factory 9) A muon ionization cooling demonstration experiment 10) Fixed field alternating gradient acceleration We are assembling a proper mix of short lecture series and of monographic seminars. The following speakers have confirmed their participation: T. Wilson (CERN) R. Palmer (Brookhaven National Laboratory) R. Bennett (RAL) S. Geer (Fermilab) Y. Kuno (Osaka) D. Harris (Fermilab) K. McFarland (Rochester) B. Bingham (RAL) The preparation of a enthusiastic, multi-national group of young scientists, capable of embracing the necessary multiple skills, will be essential in ensuring the success of the long term effort towards a Neutrino Factory. In addition, we feel that the Neutrino Factory initiative can really only be successful with a collaborative effort of the neutrino community. We would be delighted to receive your suggestions on how to optimize the nature, format and content of the School at all stages of its organization. The main area where you can help tremendously, of course, is by MAKING YOUNG COLLEAGUES IN YOUR GROUP AWARE OF THE NuFact02 SCHOOL AND BY HELPING THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN IT. Participation in the NuFact Workshop the following week as well would be ideal. We hope to see you there also.
