This page shows the results of MARS simulations of pion (and therefore muon) production in the target.

Pion and muon acceptance

The file pimuProbMap.dat contains the probability of a pion or muon from the target to pass through the cooling channel as a function of the particle's longitudinal (pL) and transverse (pT) momentum, both in units of MeV/c. This probability map was obtained using ICOOL (v3.10)[Open External Link in New Window] and the input files from the International Scoping Study Machine Working Group website[Open External Link in New Window] (U.S. ST2B scheme). The initial pion and muon distributions (at z = 0) for the "for003.dat" file were obtained from MARS[Open External Link in New Window] simulations of a 10 GeV proton beam hitting a solid tungsten cylindrical rod. A picture of the pi/mu acceptance probability map is shown here. The probability is defined as the ratio of the sum of the pi and mu weights passing the ICOOL simulation versus the sum of the pi and mu weights input to ICOOL. Empty bins are assigned a probability value given by the average of any non-zero neighbouring bins.
