Dear colleague,
As has been expected over the last few weeks, I have now
received the official rejection of our NEST proposal.  I've scanned in all
four pages of this and they are attached.  It seems that the rejection is
more to do with the size of the project and the fact that proposal does
not make it clear enough for the panel what we intended to do, rather than
the project itself.  In fact, all four referees reports are very positive.
As we never wanted to rely on NEST, other ways of funding
EMMA are already being actively pursued and I remain confident that we
will get this.  However, what the NEST would have brought is the funding to
build a core of FFAG expertise in Europe.  This will be harder to replace
and we need to discuss it at greater length over the next few weeks.

                                          cheers.........Rob

Subject: NEST proposal
Date: 2005 March 11; Friday 15:53

Hi folks,
At the last phone meeting I was asked to circulate the
requirements for the proposal to be submitted on 13th April.  Here
goes........

A general description of the programme we are going to apply to (a NEST
Adventure) is given in the first attached pdf.  The second gives more
detailed info and even more can be found, with some difficultly, on the
nest website, http://www.cordis.lu/nest[Open External Link in New Window] . Note that we're applying for a
STREP.

There are two parts to the proposal in the outline stage.  Part B is the
proposal itself and what is required can be found on pages 36-39 of the
second attachment.  This is the easy bit.  The criteria against which this
will be evaluated are given on the last page of the first attachment.

Part A is the tricky bit.  It consists of three forms, labelled A1, A2 &
A3(!).  You can find these on pages 26-29 of the second attachment.  Note
that a participant in Brussels-speak is an Institute.  Only one A1 and one
A3 are required, but A3 is the tricky one.  A2 has to be completed by each
institute and the sooner this starts, the more likely we are to be ready
on time!  (There are complications for non-EU institutes, but I think you
should assume you have to fill one of these in anyway.)

The first criteria we have to satisfy is at least three institutes from at
least three EU member states.  We need to address this immediately.

We also need a host lab.  I guess this must be CCLRC (i.e. DL), but this
means Mike and I have some internal paperwork to do.

Questions are welcome!

                                         cheers........Rob

Subject: First draft of NEST proposal
Date: 2005 April 04; Monday 15:06

Hi folks,
Attached is a first go at the FFAG proposal for an FP6 NEST.  This
will be discussed in more detail at the FFAG workshop[Open External Link in New Window] over the next few
days, but comments are very welcome before and after that.
The current plan is to submit this on Tuesday 12th April, so all
comments must be in by Monday 11th.  There are still problems with the
number of participants at the moment, however.

                                   Many thanks.......Rob

Hi folks,
Thanks to the work of many people, in particular Carol, Shane and
Bob Cywinski, the final draft of the NEST proposal is now ready.  This will
be submitted lunchtimeish CERN time tomorrow, but it's attached in case
there are any final, crucial corrections that need to be made!

                                Many thanks........Rob

Subject: Full NEST proposal requirements

Dear all,
One of my actions for the meeting tomorrow was to summarise the
requirements for a full NEST propoosal, should we be requested to submit
one.  This is done in the attached.

                                        Thanks.........Rob
