  Conceptual Design

  Proton Driver Front End
  WP2 involves the construction of an H⁻ Front End Test Stand at RAL for testing the early stages of acceleration (0–3MeV) and beam chopping required for high power proton accelerators, including proton drivers for pulsed neutron spallation sources and neutrino factories.  Flyer

  Target Studies
  To convert protons into muons, a target capable of withstanding the 4–5MW mean power of the proton driver is required.  This section (WP3) investigates the effects of this beam on solid targets.  Flyer

  World Design Study
  After two studies in the US and one based at CERN, the idea of a worldwide collaborative design study for a Neutrino Factory has been suggested.  This section (WP4) details progress in this international effort.

  MICE-UK
  The muon beam must be 'cooled', or reduced in size, to fit inside the accelerators downstream.  MICE uses a muon beam from an intermediate target of the ISIS accelerator at RAL to prove the practicality of a technique called ionisation cooling, which is unique to muons.

• 
  Neutrino Phenomenology
  As the name implies, neutrino phenomenology is the study of the observable phenomena associated with neutrinos: how they may be detected, under what conditions they may occur, and what they may reveal about new physics.  This is of key importance in deciding on a detector strategy for the Neutrino Factory's output neutrino beams.
• RF Surface Processing
  Muons must be rapidly accelerated to as much as 50 GeV before they decay to produce a focussed beam of neutrinos (and reaccelerated during cooling).  To do this RF cavities with high gradient are required.  This work package investigates processing methods for the RF cavity surfaces, to achieve high gradients while avoiding breakdown caused by surface defects.
